چکیده

Minyoung Lee and Alan J. H. McGaughey Department of Mechanical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213, USA (Received 2 February 2011; published 29 April 2011) The energetics and kinetics of the c(2 × 2) to (2√2 ×√2)R45◦ missing-row reconstruction transition on the Cu(100) surface are investigated using density functional theory calculations. First, oxygen-molecule-induced surface restructuring on the unreconstructed Cu(100) surface is compared to that on the missing-row reconstructed surface. We find that the surface-oxide energy decrease on the missing-row reconstruction (−0.149 eV/Å2) is larger than that on the unreconstructed surface (−0.080 eV/Å2). Cu2O-like structures, which are found on the reconstructed surface, are not found on the unreconstructed surface. These results indicate that the missing-row reconstruction is necessary for the formation of Cu2O on the Cu(100) surface. Then, we investigate copper ejection from the c(2 × 2) phase using the nudged elastic band method. A series of ejections onto the nearest-neighbor copper atom is found to be the most probable mechanism for the formation of the missing row. The barriers for the subsequent copper diffusion events are comparable to those on the perfect c(2 × 2) phase and the clean copper surface, suggesting that the c(2 × 2) phase acts as a copper diffusion channel during surface oxidation.

XPS and STM studies of the oxidation of hydrogen chloride at Cu(100) surfaces

Available online 29 December 2015 The dissociative chemisorption of HCl on clean and oxidized Cu(100) surfaces has been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning tunnelingmicroscopy (STM).Whereas the dissociation of HCl at the clean surface is limited to the formation of a (√2 × √2)-R45° Cl(a)monolayer, the presence of surface oxygen removes this barrier, leading to...

Lateral ordering of PTCDA on the clean and the oxygen pre-covered Cu(100) surface investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction

We have investigated the adsorption of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (PTCDA) on the clean and on the oxygen pre-covered Cu(100) surface [referred to as (√2 × 2√2)R45° - 2O/Cu(100)] by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Our results confirm the (4√2 × 5√2)R45° superstructure of PTCDA/Cu(100) reported by A. Schmidt et al. [J. Phys. ...

Effect of Transition Metal Ions on the B Ring Oxidation of Sterols and their Kinetics in Oil-in-Water Emulsions

This study investigated the effect of metal ions on the oxidation of sterols and their kinetics in oil-in-water emulsions. Sterol substrates were added with different metal ions (Cu(2+), Fe(2+), Mn(2+), Zn(2+), Na(+), and Mg(2+)) of five concentrations and investigated after 2 h of heating at 90 °C. The substrates added with Fe(2+) and Cu(2+) were heated continuously to evaluate the kinetics of...

Cytotoxic Effect of \" Glycated Albumin-Transition Metal Ion\" on Rat Hepatocyte Suspension

Background: Combination of glycation and oxidation is associated with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of glycated proteins in presence of transition metal ions on production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rat hepatocyte suspension.  Methods: Glycated albumin was prepared by incubation of bovine serum albumin with 100 mM glucose in 0.3 M phosphate buffer a...

Direct evidence for apo B-100-mediated copper reduction: studies with purified apo B-100 and detection of tryptophanyl radicals.

Copper binding to apolipoprotein B-100 (apo B-100) and its reduction by endogenous components of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) represent critical steps in copper-mediated LDL oxidation, where cuprous ion (Cu(I)) generated from cupric ion (Cu(II)) reduction is the real trigger for lipid peroxidation. Although the copper-reducing capacity of the lipid components of LDL has been studied extensivel...
